What is Menopause?

Menopause is a biological, physiological, cultural, familial, and spiritual rite of passage that can begin as early as age 35. The first phase of this transition is called Perimenopause, during which 50+ possible symptoms may occur and can last a few years to over a decade. Menopause itself is defined by 365 consecutive days without a menstrual cycle. Post-menopause refers to the remainder of a woman's life beyond her reproductive years.

This transition occurs due to the decline in hormones as the ovaries cease estrogen production. This may happen gradually or suddenly after a hysterectomy or certain medical treatments like chemotherapy. Since estrogen receptors exist in nearly every organ system, these hormone fluctuations can deeply affect a woman’s physical body and emotional well-being, often disrupting her work-life balance.

The 50+ Symptoms of Menopause: More Than Just Hot Flashes

Menopause is often associated with hot flashes and night sweats, but its impact extends far beyond these two common symptoms. Women can experience over 50 physical, emotional, and cognitive changes, often going without proper diagnosis or treatment.

Despite its commonality, menopause typically unfolds in secrecy and silence, overshadowed by stigma, shame, and fear. Many women enter perimenopause already depleted and underserved by a healthcare system that’s largely unprepared to address their needs.

o 80% of women will experience menopausal symptoms.

o Only 10% of women receive adequate care for menopause-related issues.

o Women aged 45-65 experience the highest rate of suicide, highlighting the emotional toll of this life stage.

o Untreated menopause symptoms can include:

  • Anxiety and depression

  • Fatigue and insomnia

  • Cognitive changes (brain fog, memory issues)

  • Joint pain and muscle aches

  • Weight gain and metabolic shifts

  • Vaginal dryness and painful intercourse

  • Hair loss and skin changes

There is currently a significant gap in menopause education for doctors, leaving many women misdiagnosed or dismissed when seeking help. This lack of medical knowledge means women often face symptoms without guidance, contributing to a profound sense of isolation. Addressing this gap is crucial for improving the quality of care and life for women during menopause.

Despite the inevitability of aging, suffering peri to post menopause isn’t necessary. With some awareness and support from a menopause coach, it’s possible to navigate this transition with better understanding and ease. Menopause is not just a biological inevitability but instead, a chapter of life shaped by resilience and wisdom that can even become a time to celebrate.

Why might someone need a menopause coach?

The critical gap in care for menopausal women remains a real struggle. While 80% of women experience symptoms related to menopause, only a very small percentage receive the support and care they need, if any care at all. This is largely due to the lack of training of medical professionals and a system that under values aging women. A recent poll shows that less than 7% of medical residents feel qualified to treat menopause patients. Without proper training, even well-meaning healthcare providers may overlook or misdiagnose menopausal symptoms. Many women say they feel dismissed and gaslit by their doctors, even by trusted ones who previously helped them through an illness or delivered their children. Accessing the right care can feel like searching for a needle in a haystack leaving menopausal women to feel isolated and alone.

In addition to the 50+ physical symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, increased anxiety, depression and join pain, Menopause brings profound emotional changes, often leading to feelings of invisibility and loss of self-worth.

Having a menopause coach means having an ally and an experienced guide to help you navigate these challenges while supporting you in finding your power as you step into becoming who you’re truly meant to be.
